Senior’s Health – Cancer Prevention and Magnesium

istock_000004752008xsmall snr cancerWith one in two men and one in three women developing cancer in their lifetime, it’s important to cover the relationship of cancer to magnesium deficiency.

Research and experimental data suggest that adequate magnesium might protect against initiation of precancerous cellular changes. However, although increased longevity in magnesium-rich geographic areas is clearly correlated with lower heart disease mortality,(1-3,4,5-13) its correlation with cancer prevalence is inconsistent.(14,15-20,21-35) The risk of most cancers increases with aging, and with length of exposure to agents with cancerous potential.

Despite provocative findings that suggest that magnesium deficiency might be implicated in aspects of the development and treatment of abnormal cell proliferation potentially leading to cancer, there are many unknowns. Investigation of these questions might lead to means to prevent certain types of cancers. Whether higher magnesium intakes might be protective against the processes that lead to tumor formation in humans as it is in some animal models deserves study.
